Objective of Symposium

Historical background

Hatchlings, juveniles, subadults and adults of Emys orbicularis population inhabiting small stream running through Kiten

Symposium has followed the symposia held in Dresden, Germany (1996), Le Blanc, France (1999), Košice, Slovakia (2002) and Valencia, Spain (2005).

Althought over 350 participants had visited these four symposia, just five of them came from the Balkan countries!

Aim of symposium

After certain latest changes in Bulgaria (international political position, traffic and tourism progress...) together with its geographic location and a reasonable price-performance ratio, symposium in this country has completed goal adopted in Slovakian one:

to enable the participation of researchers from East European countries (in this case especially from the Balkans)

Bringing together scientists and conservationists from the all parts of the Emys orbicularis distribution has allowed:

to exchange research results and information

to extend our knowledge and experiences of the biology, distribution, status and conservation of this peculiar species
